Wellness Wednesdays: Kids and Health

Obesity in children is an obvious epidemic. A recent study from researchers at Ohio State University and Temple University has found that one in five American four-year-olds is obese. That is an approximately more than half a million four-year-olds across the country. For some parents it is a battle to get their kids to eat more fruits and vegetables. There are several ways that will help your kids see the importance of eating healthy and choosing produce over potato chips.

The experts at the Produce for Better Health Foundation suggest, letting your kids select a new fruit or vegetable for the whole family to try. Another idea is eating your way through the alphabet by trying one fruit and one vegetable beginning with a new letter each week or month. As your children are helping in the kitchen, add in some math skills and let them measure the produce that they are preparing.

On another note I wanted to know your thoughts about 11-year-old Carl Joseph Walker Hoover. This adorable little boy committed suicide because of the bullying at school. Unfortunately bullying is something that all children encounter on a daily basis, but it is becoming more extreme. It also seems as if the suicide rate of children is getting younger. My heart goes out to his family. The full story is on AOL Black Voices.

What do you think is an appropriate disciplinary action for bullies?

Who do you feel is held responsible the school, parents or both?
