The Health Benefits of Sex

Summer is almost over for some of us ,with seasonal changes, exercising outside is not an option. As we prepare for hibernation mode and think about how we are going to stay in shape during the bitter cold, the commercials for cheaper gym memberships and infomercials for in home exercise equipment become a strong consideration. The testimonials are tempting, as people show viewers how the home equipment reduced inches off of their bodies in just two weeks. As we reach for the phone, the wonderful five monthly installments of 149.95 flashes across the screen. The phone and equipment are forgotten all together.

Looking for a new way to get a lot of exercise which leads to some health benefits? No need to spend endless hours at the gym or purchase the expensive equipment from the infomercials. Just add some sex in your life. This work out is, for the most part, free and can happen right in the bedroom, or any where else you see fit.

Studies have shown that sexual intercourse will burn approximately 150 calories per half hour. This is the same as walking at a speed of about 3.0 on the treadmill for a half hour. Since sex is a form of physical exercise, if you opt to have sex three times a week for a whole year, that is approximately jogging 75 miles. Not only will you maintain your body weight you will most likely loose some pounds. Sex, like all exercise regimens improves circulation and increases the blood flow to your brain. The supply of oxygen to the cells stimulates the organs in your body which leads to stress reduction and improved sleep. As exercise at times can leave you sore, sex is a great pain reliever.

When we have intercourse we releases a hormone called oxytocin in the body which releases endorphins, the happy hormone. As arousal approach and an orgasm presents itself the oxytocin levels increases. This will help with arthritis, pre menstrual syndrome, and headaches. Although sex is a natural pain reliever in the body, studies have not shown that it will decrease emotional pain. However, there is a healing power of intimacy if there is shared love.

If you are not loved on an emotional, physical, and spiritual level studies have shown that you may be three to five times more likely of a premature death. There is also positive aspect of touch that is needed for human survival. In the 1930’s there was a large infant mortality rate due to the lack of touch from the babies parents. For adults it’s a nurturing process. If there is mutual love, power of touch is healing. Furthermore, fully understanding the power of love begins with loving yourself first.

Even though sexual intercourse has a lot of health benefits, there are also many consequences that are not so healthy. Like most forms of exercise, protection and common sense is needed. The gym requires sports bras and jock straps; football requires helmets and mouth guards; hi-top gym shoes for basketball, and for soccer, shin guards. Sex is no different please protect yourself and be responsible.
